In Memoriam: David R.R. Smith Sr.

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of our Brother, David R.R. Smith Sr. David passed away in his home last Saturday, April 25, 2014. Born on June 21, 1942, David was 71 at the time of his passing.

David was an active member in the Lodge and will be missed. At the end the April Quarterly meeting, we circled up, joined hands, and sang the Song of the Lodge and the Song of the Order. Our circle was different this time; we left a single space between two of our Brothers so that David could join us one last time.

Below are some of David’s many accomplishments in the Order of the Arrow and Scouting.

David attended the National Order of the Arrow Conference NOAC the following years:
1973, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1983, 1986, 1990, 1992, and 1994.

David served as a Committee Member for Troop 346, and more recently served as a Council Member at Large and Merit Badge Counselor

David R.R. Smith Sr. (Pop Pop), 71, of Reading passed away April 26th in his residence.

He was the husband of Dorothy R. (Rodemann) Smith. Born in Stony Creek Mills, he was the son of the late Ralph R. and Isobel (Line) Smith.

David served during the Vietnam War in the Marines. He volunteered at Community General and St. Joseph’s Hospitals, Reading Fire Dept.: Friendship #4, Union#13 (president, foreman and asst. foreman), Junior #2 (foreman and asst. foreman) last serving as chaplain.

He was a member of Boy Scouts of America: Order of the Arrow, Vigil Honor Member and Woodbadge. He was an active former member of St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church and a current member of Holy Cross United Methodist Church.

David worked for TMW, Rockwell, Goss, Firestone and RAC.

In additon to his wife, Dorothy, David is survived by son, David R.R. Smith II, husband of Heather of Cressona; daughter, Lori A., wife of Troy Raybold of Colden, NY; grandchildren: Tyler, Allister, David M. and Addyson, and a sister, Betty Jane Miller of Greensboro, NC.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 3rd at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Cross United Methodist Church, 329 N. 5th St., Reading, PA. The family will receive friends Friday evening 6-9:00 p.m. in the Lutz Funeral Home, Inc., Mt. Penn. Interment in Berks County Memorial Gardens. Contributions may be made to the American P.O.
